The title "wombat" originates from the now just about extinct Dharug language spoken via the aboriginal Dharug people today, who at first inhabited the Sydney place.[3] It was first recorded in January 1798, when John Rate and James Wilson, a white male who had adopted aboriginal methods, frequented the world of what is now Bargo, New South Wales.
